Watched 3 derby games in a matter of 4 days.....one happened at wembley, the second one at Santiago bernabau....and last but not the least at white heart lane...... the passion, the intensity and the buzz is incomparable.... supporters from all over the world watch these games with interest.... compared to the century old leagues like the premiership n laliga the Indian premier league is still nascent..
One of the commentators dubbed the Mumbai-Pune game on par with the manchester derby! well, i was jus thinkin if it ever can be tht big.....with the existin set up of the IPL the answer is an unequivocal no....IPL is a big commercial success....but for me it's nothin but a circus...... Club football/cricket is all about loyalty of the supporters n how they relate to the club over a period of time..... BCCI's policy of having a player auction every 3 years and zuggling almost the entire team is jus not makin any sense to me...... The moment we think of Man United names of a paul scholes,a david beckham and a Ryan Giggs pop up in our minds.... every kid idolizes these personalities and this gives the history and identity to football clubs.........
talkin of loyalty n support who r the deccan chargers supporters supposes to idolize ? the concepts of not havin a youth system and the tournament itself played in a window cramped between national tours is hardly doing any good... While IPL was instrumental in bringin in young talents like Ravichandran ashwin, Paul Valthaty and a handful of others to the center stage - BCCI claiming IPL performances would not be considered as a basis for national team selections left me gobsmacked !
One positive in this debacle called IPL is givin a chance to youngsters n havin a limit of 4 foreign players for the playin 11..... but this isnt enough.....If the men in charge r really thinkin of doin good to indian cricket.....its important to invest in facilities to train youth....havin a club owned trainin ground n other facilities would help... if coaches start workin here through out the year in identifying and honin the skills of young talent that would do indian cricket a lot of good......European football clubs spend millions of dollars every year to help young talent.... IPL was designed on the basic blue print of the european football leagues but ended up as a commercial circus and failed to absorb any of the merits in the european leagues...Hope thins change in the future........ IPL should promote cricket n help the game instead of spinnin money n becomin the holy grail for cheerleaders !
